The origins of Christmas, both secular and religious, go back thousands of years, but the great Christmas tradition that permeates culture was significantly shaped in the 19th century by assorted "movers and shakers." The publishing industry itself flooded the market with gift books designed to be given as Christmas presents; often some of the most recognized authors had their literary debuts in such annuals. Featured "movers and shakers" in this exhibit will include Washington Irving, Clement Clarke Moore, Charles Dickens' and Thomas Nast.
