Gregangelo presents the world premiere of “1906: A Journey Through the Mystical City” -- a theatrical celebration of the City of San Francisco and its history through specialty circus acts, original music, dance, scenic projections, and innovative special effects. The hour-long family show at Theatre 39 at Pier 39 takes the audience on an action-packed ride from the time of Native Americans, through the Gold Rush and Great Quake of 1906, to today’s City and its promising future. The show will have an all-matinee run, with a new take on the traditional “Circus Parade” kicking off every show. Performances are Thursdays and Fridays, 1pm and 3pm; Saturdays at 1pm.
The opening act features acrobats as Argonauts, sailors, and explorers tumbling among frolicking dancers in a boisterous Barbary Coast setting. Suddenly, amid the jovial and prosperous energy, the thunderous 1906 earthquake takes its devastating toll on The City. Archival imagery of the catastrophe is projected behind the action. As the smoke settles, a winged aerialist representing the City Seal’s mythical Fire Phoenix appears, soaring overhead as the scenery unfolds to reveal the colors of the rebuilt City by the Bay. Other singing, dancing, (and rapping) characters include “G. G. Bridge” and “Babe Ridge”, humorously enacting their rivalry; a couple of comically cynical east coast tourists; and a cast of multi-talented ethnic dancers and internationally-acclaimed circus performers.
“1906: A Journey Through the Mystical City” is produced by Gregangelo Herrera, native Third Generation San Franciscan and internationally known artistic director, performer, choreographer, and costume designer, who has been featured on the likes of the Discovery Channel, HGTV’s Offbeat America, and Cirque Du Soleil’s Solstrom on BRAVO. Gregangelo is the dynamic creative force behind his San Francisco-based Velocity Circus, a thriving and highly sought-after source of Arts and Entertainment in all forms, producing shows for such entertainment industry giants as Warner Brother and Univision.
Proceeds from the show will benefit “Children United by Experience” a Bay Area non-profit founded by Gregangelo and Velocity Arts & Entertainment that provide arts programming for youth, and elevated mentoring and performance opportunities for young emerging artists.
