The 11th IAGA – The International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy – Scientific Assembly will be held in Sopron, Hungary in 2009.

Introduction of GGRI

The Geodetic and Geophysical Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences has more or less a similar structure as IUGG (The International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics), and the activity of the Geophysical Department corresponds to that of IAGA. The main research field at the Geophysical Department of GGRI is “Earth electromagnetism”, in a broad sense: from the investigation of electromagnetic structures in the solid Earth to the study of the near-Earth space.

The following domains and their interactions are investigated: Sun, interplanetary field, magnetosphere, ionosphere, atmosphere, electromagnetic structure of the solid Earth (on near-surface-, crustal and mantle scales, especially beneath the Carpathian Basin and neighbouring regions), Earth’s core. The research is based on observatory data (mainly on data of the Széchenyi István Geophysical Observatory near Nagycenk, operated by the institute) and field measurements.

Hosted meetings

Sopron has hosted an IUGG-related meeting already: the 1976 IAGA WG I.2 meeting on Electromagnetic Induction in the Earth, and the 2001 IAG Assembly was held in Budapest.

Geophysicists at the Geodetic and Geophysical Research Institute have already organised a number of international meetings like PANCARDI, Alpine Workshop, COST, etc. Sopron will apply to hold the 2008 annual meeting of the EEGS (European Engineering Geophysical Society).
